The Unflattering Side of Us

They don’t wear white robes with pointy heads, but there are large groups of people in this country who love to hate.

It is disturbing.

I see it in the comment section at the bottom of online newspaper stories. Bloggers launch anonymous, vicious attacks against people they’ve never met. They make judgments without benefit of context or background.

There is a pack mentality to the negativity, a rush to grab torch and pitchfork and begin chanting in the streets for someone’s head.

I also see it on Facebook, Twitter and in casual conversation.

Delighting in a person’s failure is ugly. It has become contagious. I don’t like it.

Everyone is flawed. Please take the time to examine someone’s entire career or life before reducing it to rubbish because of a single mistake.
